Before you get to us

What to do in a dental emergency

These first steps may help while you wait to see the dentist.

Knocked-out adult tooth +

Hold the tooth by the crown (the white part), not the root. If it’s dirty, rinse it briefly in milk or water. If you can, gently place it back in the socket and bite on a clean cloth. If not, store it in milk and call us straight away. Don’t try to put a baby tooth back in.

Chipped or broken tooth +

Rinse your mouth with warm water and keep any broken pieces. A cold compress on the outside of your cheek may help with swelling.

Toothache or swelling +

Rinse with warm water and take over-the-counter pain relief as directed on the label. Don’t place aspirin directly on your gums. If swelling spreads or you develop a fever, seek care promptly.

Bleeding or soft tissue injury +

Apply gentle pressure with clean gauze or a cloth for 10–15 minutes. If the bleeding doesn’t stop, go to your nearest emergency department.

FAQs

What counts as a dental emergency?

Severe pain, a knocked-out or broken tooth, swelling, signs of infection, or bleeding that won’t stop are all reasons to call. If you’re unsure, call us and we’ll help you work out how urgently you need to be seen.

Can I get an emergency appointment today?

We offer emergency appointments when the studio is open, Monday to Friday, 9 am – 5 pm. Call us as early as you can and we’ll do our best to see you as soon as possible.

What should I do outside opening hours?

Submit an enquiry and our team will call you on the next business day. In the meantime, manage pain with over-the-counter pain relief as directed. For serious facial injuries, uncontrolled bleeding, or swelling that affects your breathing or swallowing, call 000 or go to your nearest hospital emergency department.

Will emergency treatment hurt?

Managing pain is one of our first priorities. Your dentist will use local anaesthetic or other pain relief where appropriate and explain what to expect at each step.

How long does an emergency appointment take?

It depends on the problem and the treatment needed. Some issues can be managed in one visit, while others need a follow-up appointment. Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. Before proceeding, you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner.

How much does emergency dental treatment cost?

Costs depend on the treatment you need. Your dentist will explain your options and the costs before treatment goes ahead. Payment options, including Afterpay and Humm, are available.

Will my health fund cover it?

It depends on your fund and level of cover. We’re a preferred provider for Bupa, Medibank and CBHS, and our team can help you check what you may be able to claim.

Can dental emergencies be prevented?

Not always, but regular check-ups, brushing and flossing, wearing a mouthguard for contact sports, and not using your teeth to open packaging can all help reduce your risk.
