Sleep Dentistry in Mount Eliza | Peninsula Dental Studio

Dental anxiety is more common than you might think. Sleep dentistry makes it possible to get the care you need, comfortably, and at your own pace.

If anxiety has been keeping you away from the dentist, you’re not alone. Many people put off dental care for months or years because of fear. It might be fear of pain, fear of the unknown, or memories of a difficult experience in the past. At Peninsula Dental Studio, we understand this, and we take it seriously.

Sleep dentistry allows patients with dental anxiety to undergo treatment in a deeply relaxed state, or fully asleep, providing an experience that is as comfortable as possible. Our team works carefully and without pressure to ensure you feel heard and supported at every stage, long before any treatment begins.

Sleep Dentistry

What is sleep dentistry?

Sleep dentistry, also called sedation dentistry, uses sedatives or general anaesthesia to help patients relax deeply or sleep through their dental treatment. Depending on your level of anxiety and the treatment required, options range from light sedation (where you remain conscious but deeply calm) to general anaesthesia (where you are fully asleep and unaware of the procedure).

A specialist anaesthetist is present throughout your treatment to monitor your comfort and safety. When you wake, you will have no memory of the procedure, and most patients are surprised that the experience was so straightforward.

Sleep dentistry may be suitable if you experience any of the following:

  • Dental anxiety or dental phobia
  • Fear of needles or dental instruments
  • Low pain tolerance or highly sensitive teeth
  • A strong gag reflex
  • A previous difficult dental experience
  • A need for complex or lengthy treatment

Our process

What to expect at Peninsula Dental Studio

Step: 1 Initial consultation

Your first appointment is a conversation, not a procedure. We take the time to understand your concerns, your medical history, and what you need from us to feel comfortable. There’s no pressure to commit to anything at this stage. If sedation or general anaesthesia isn’t suitable for your situation, we’ll discuss other comfort measures. You will have options regardless, including noise-cancelling headphones, TV screens, and VR headsets.

Step 2: Medical assessment with our anaesthetist

Before any sedation can take place, our specialist anaesthetist will conduct a general medical assessment to confirm you’re a suitable candidate and to plan the right level of sedation for your needs. This step exists entirely for your safety and comfort. We move through it at whatever pace suits you.

Step 3: Your appointment

When everything is in place, we will gently sedate you or put you to sleep in the treatment room. Your dental work proceeds while you are fully relaxed and unaware. Our anaesthetist remains present throughout, monitoring you continuously until the procedure is complete.

Step: 4 Review and aftercare

After your appointment, we give you time to come around in a comfortable recovery space. For light sedation, most patients feel ready to go home within a couple of hours. General anaesthesia typically requires a full day of rest. You will need someone to drive you home. We provide clear aftercare instructions and remain available if you have any questions after your visit.

Benefits

Why patients choose sleep dentistry at Peninsula Dental Studio

We take your anxiety seriously +

We don’t minimise dental anxiety or treat it as something patients need to simply push through. At Peninsula Dental Studio, your concerns are the starting point for every conversation. We work around what you need, not the other way around.

A team that moves at your pace +

Nothing happens without your agreement. We explain each step before it occurs, check in with you throughout the process, and never rush. If you want to stop or slow down at any point, you say the word.

Specialist anaesthetic care +

Your safety during sedation is our primary concern. A specialist anaesthetist, not just a general dental team member, is present and monitoring you throughout every sedated procedure.

More treatment in fewer visits +

For patients with significant anxiety, sleep dentistry can make it possible to complete work that might otherwise require multiple separate appointments. This reduces the number of times you need to work up to an appointment, and can be more practical if anxiety makes scheduling difficult.

Options for everyone +
Not everyone is suitable for general anaesthesia, and sedation isn’t the only tool we have. We offer a range of comfort measures to make your visit as manageable as possible, whatever your situation. This includes noise-cancelling headphones, screens, and VR headsets.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is sleep dentistry safe?

You can update this answer inside the page editor.

Will I feel any pain during the procedure?

No. The purpose of sleep dentistry is to ensure you are comfortable and free from pain throughout your treatment. Depending on the level of sedation, you will either be fully asleep or deeply relaxed. Either way, you will not experience pain during the procedure.

Is there any risk I’ll wake up during treatment?

The risk of waking during a procedure under anaesthesia is extremely low. Your anaesthetist monitors your sedation level throughout and adjusts as needed to keep you comfortable and unconscious for the duration of the treatment.

What procedures can be done under sleep dentistry?

Many dental procedures can be performed under sleep dentistry, including fillings, extractions, wisdom teeth removal, root canal therapy, dental crowns, and a range of cosmetic treatments. During your consultation, we’ll confirm which options are available for your specific treatment.

How long does recovery take?

Recovery time depends on the level of sedation used. With light sedation, most patients feel themselves again within a few hours. General anaesthesia typically requires a full day of rest. You’ll need someone to drive you home regardless. We’ll give you clear aftercare instructions and a contact point for any questions that come up afterwards.

What if sedation isn’t suitable for me?

Not everyone is a candidate for sedation, and that’s fine. We have other measures to make your visit as comfortable as possible, including noise-cancelling headphones, TV screens, and VR headsets. We’ll discuss your options at your consultation and work with you to find the right approach.

Is sleep dentistry covered by health insurance?

Coverage varies depending on your health fund and the level of your policy. Some funds cover part or all the anaesthetic costs for eligible procedures. Our team can help you explore your options at your consultation.

What if I don’t have anyone to drive me home?
If you’re unable to arrange a lift, please let us know before your appointment. We’ll talk through the options available, which may include remaining in our recovery space until you’re ready, or arranging alternative transport. We want to make this work for you.
