Signs to look for

Signs your wisdom teeth may need attention

Wisdom teeth can become impacted when there isn’t enough room for them to come through properly. Common signs include:

  • Red, swollen or inflamed gums around a back tooth
  • Pain or tenderness at the back of your mouth or jaw
  • Difficulty opening your mouth fully or swallowing
  • A bad taste, bad breath or discharge from the gum
  • Swollen or tender glands under your jaw
  • Swelling in your gums, mouth or face
  • A fever alongside gum swelling

These symptoms can have other causes. If you notice any of them, book an assessment so your dentist can check what’s going on.

Our process

What to expect at Peninsula Dental Studio

01 Consultation and x-ray

We talk through your symptoms and dental history, and take an OPG x-ray to see the position of your wisdom teeth. Your dentist will explain whether removal is recommended, your options and the costs involved, before anything goes ahead.

02 Comfort options

Depending on your needs and suitability, wisdom teeth can be removed under local anaesthetic, sedation or general anaesthesia. Our sleep dentistry option is available in-clinic, with an anaesthetist present throughout.

03 Removal and aftercare

On the day, we’ll go over what to expect before treatment begins. Afterwards, you’ll receive clear aftercare instructions, and we can book a follow-up to check how you’re healing. Recovery varies from person to person, and your dentist will talk you through what to expect.

Why it matters

Why wisdom teeth are often removed

Removing impacted or problematic wisdom teeth may help reduce the risk of further oral health issues.

Protecting nearby teeth +

An impacted wisdom tooth can press against the tooth next to it, which may contribute to decay or damage over time.

Reducing the risk of infection +

Partially erupted wisdom teeth can be hard to clean, which can lead to gum inflammation and infection.

Easing ongoing discomfort +

If a wisdom tooth is causing recurring pain or swelling, removal may help relieve those symptoms.

Supporting jaw health +

In some cases, impacted wisdom teeth can be associated with cysts or other changes in the jaw. An assessment helps identify these early.

Wisdom teeth
FAQs

What does it mean if a wisdom tooth is impacted?

A wisdom tooth is impacted when there isn’t enough room for it to come through the gum properly. It may grow at an angle, sit partly under the gum, or stay trapped beneath it. Impactions are commonly described as mesial (angled forward), distal (angled back), vertical or horizontal.

Do all wisdom teeth need to be removed?

No. Wisdom teeth that have come through fully, are healthy and can be cleaned properly may not need removal. Your dentist will assess your teeth and x-ray, and explain whether removal is recommended for you.

What happens if I leave an impacted wisdom tooth?

Some impacted wisdom teeth cause no problems, while others can lead to infection, decay in neighbouring teeth or ongoing discomfort. Regular check-ups help us monitor any changes.

How long does the procedure take?

It depends on how many teeth are being removed and how complex the removal is. Your dentist will give you an estimate at your consultation, including how long to plan to be at the studio.

Can I be asleep for my wisdom teeth removal?

If you’re suitable, yes. We offer sleep dentistry in-clinic, ranging from sedation to general anaesthesia. An anaesthetist assesses you beforehand and is present throughout. You’ll need someone to drive you home. Learn more about sleep dentistry.

What is recovery like?

Some swelling and tenderness for a few days after removal is common. Recovery varies depending on the complexity of your procedure and how you heal. Following your aftercare instructions helps support healing, and our team is available if you have any questions.

Will my health fund cover wisdom teeth removal?

It depends on your fund and level of cover. We’re a preferred provider for Bupa, Medibank and CBHS, and our team can help you check what you may be able to claim.

What are the risks of wisdom teeth removal?

As with any surgical procedure, wisdom teeth removal carries risks. These can include infection, dry socket, bleeding, and temporary or, rarely, permanent numbness. Your dentist will discuss the risks relevant to you before treatment. Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. Before proceeding, you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner.
