Our process

What to expect at Peninsula Dental Studio

01 Consultation and x-ray

We talk through your concerns, dental history and medical history, and take an OPG x-ray to see the position of your wisdom teeth. Your dentist will explain whether removal is recommended, your sedation options and the costs involved. There’s no pressure to commit at this stage.

02 Medical assessment with our anaesthetist

Before any sedation, our anaesthetist reviews your medical history to confirm you’re suitable and to plan the right level of sedation for you. If sedation isn’t suitable, we’ll discuss other ways to help you feel comfortable.

03 Removal and recovery

On the day, you’ll be sedated or put to sleep, and your wisdom teeth are removed while our anaesthetist monitors you throughout. You’ll rest in our recovery area before going home, and you’ll need someone to drive you. We’ll give you clear aftercare instructions and can book a follow-up to check how you’re healing.

Benefits

Why choose sleep dentistry for wisdom teeth removal

For some patients, being sedated or asleep can make wisdom teeth removal more manageable.

Less anxiety on the day +

If anxiety has stopped you from having your wisdom teeth looked at, sedation can help you feel calm, or you can be asleep for the procedure.

Fewer visits +

Where appropriate, several wisdom teeth may be removed in a single appointment rather than over multiple visits.

Monitored throughout +

An anaesthetist is present for the whole procedure, monitoring you until treatment is complete.

Options for everyone +

If sedation isn’t suitable for you, we offer other comfort measures, including noise-cancelling headphones, TV screens and VR headsets.

Sleep dentistry
FAQs

What is sleep dentistry?

Sleep dentistry uses sedation or general anaesthesia so you can be deeply relaxed or asleep during treatment. Options range from light sedation, where you stay conscious but calm, to general anaesthesia, where you’re fully asleep.

Is sleep dentistry suitable for wisdom teeth removal?

It’s commonly used for wisdom teeth removal, particularly for anxious patients or more complex removals. Your dentist and anaesthetist will confirm whether it’s suitable for you.

Will I feel anything during the procedure?

Sleep dentistry is designed to keep you comfortable. Depending on the level of sedation, you’ll be either deeply relaxed or asleep, and your anaesthetist monitors you and adjusts your sedation as needed throughout.

Who will be with me during the procedure?

Your dentist performs the removal, and our anaesthetist is present the whole time to monitor you.

How long is recovery?

With light sedation, you’ll usually rest for a couple of hours before going home. General anaesthesia typically needs a full day of rest. Some swelling and tenderness for a few days after wisdom teeth removal is common, and recovery varies from person to person.

Do I need someone to drive me home?

Yes. You’ll need someone to drive you home after sedation or general anaesthesia. If you can’t arrange a lift, let us know before your appointment and we’ll talk through your options.

Will my health fund cover it?

It depends on your fund and level of cover. Some funds cover part of the anaesthetic costs for eligible procedures. We’re a preferred provider for Bupa, Medibank and CBHS, and our team can help you check what you may be able to claim.

What are the risks?

As with any surgical procedure, wisdom teeth removal carries risks, including infection, dry socket, bleeding, and temporary or, rarely, permanent numbness. Sedation and general anaesthesia also carry risks, which your anaesthetist will discuss with you during your medical assessment. Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. Before proceeding, you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner.
